More photo radar coming to Quebec

The Quebec government appears poised to green light more photo radar cameras in selected cities.

The cameras, which will be part of a pilot project, will remain in place for at least 18 months, after which the government will decide if they will be installed permanently.

The exact location of the new cameras has not been announced, but Quebec City is reportedly the largest municipality taking part in the new project.

There are currently no photo radar cameras in that city, but Mayor Regis Labeaume has been pushing for them since 2009.

Transport Quebec said the public has shown overwhelming support for photo radar, as long as it is used to promote safer roads rather than as a revenue generator.

Fifteen cameras, looking both for speeders and red light runners, are already installed throughout the province.

An all-party committee looking into the effectiveness of those cameras found they had a positive impact on reducing speed and collisions.

In a November 2011 report, the committee said drivers slowed down by an average of 10 kilometres per hour and there was an 85 per cent drop in vehicles running red lights.

That pilot project brought in about $20 million in fines.

A bill that will be tabled Wednesday morning in the National Assembly will reportedly make those cameras permanent. More details on the Quebec City pilot project are expected to be released later in the afternoon.

The government installed five fixed photo radar units and one mobile unit in Montreal in 2009.

According to Radio-Canada, the city opted out of getting more cameras because management of project would remain the responsibility of the province.
