OPP probe fatal Highway 7 crash
Three people were killed and two others injured Wednesday in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 7 along Silver Lake, just west of Perth, Ont., police said.
Emergency crews were called at 7:25 a.m. ET to the crash scene between Maberly and Sharbot Lake, Sgt. Kristine Rae of the Ontario Provincial Police said.
It was determined two passenger vans collided, one heading west with four people and the other heading east with a lone driver.
The lone driver, a woman from Sharbot Lake, Ont., and the male driver and a passenger in the westbound van, both from Ottawa, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other passengers in the westbound van, including a child, were taken to hospital in Perth and then Ottawa with serious injuries.
The victims' identities have not been released.
Beer cans strewn about at crash site
The front end of one van was crumpled and baggage from the vehicle was strewn across the highway. Numerous cans of beer could also be seen spread across the highway, but it is unclear if they were empty or unopened.
Investigators from Lanark County OPP arrived around 8 a.m. and continue to assess the site. Police are investigating to see if alcohol played a role in the crash.
Highway 7 is closed in both directions from Zealand Road to County Road 36, and detours are expected to be in place until late in the afternoon.
Silver Lake is about 20 kilometres west of Perth in Tay Valley Township and about 120 km southwest of Ottawa.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Lanark OPP at 613-267-2626.
